How do I dispute a Dubai traffic fine?

You have two routes to dispute a Dubai traffic fine: administrative and judicial.

Administrative — Dubai Police complaint

• Submit through the Dubai Police app, the Dubai Police website, or in person at a Dubai Police service centre.
• Submit within 30 days of receiving notice of the fine for the fastest route.
• Required: fine number, vehicle plate, evidence (dashcam footage, witness statements, photos showing the alleged violation did not occur or that the right circumstances applied).
• Outcome: either the fine is cancelled, reduced, or upheld. The decision is communicated by SMS or via the app.

Judicial — Traffic Court

• If the administrative dispute fails, you can escalate to the Traffic Court (part of the Dubai Courts).
• Filing fees apply. Hearings are typically scheduled within weeks.
• A lawyer is not required for minor disputes but is strongly recommended for serious offences (DUI, reckless driving, unlicensed driving) where the penalty includes black points or vehicle impoundment.

What you should NOT do

• Do not pay the fine before disputing. Payment is treated as acceptance and limits your options.
• Do not ignore the fine. Unpaid traffic fines block vehicle renewal, attract late fees, and can prevent travel for very large outstanding totals.

Black points and impoundment

• Even if you pay the fine, black points stay on your licence for one year.
• An impounded vehicle can only be released through Dubai Police; release takes additional time and fees.
