South Korea Visa from Dubai: What UAE Residents Need
If you're a UAE resident planning a trip to Seoul or Busan, the South Korea visa from Dubai process depends almost entirely on your passport. Some nationalities walk in visa-free. Others need to submit at the Korean Consulate in Abu Dhabi and wait two weeks. Here's the straight version.
Quick answer
UAE and GCC nationals don't need a visa for tourist trips up to 30 days — you just need K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) clearance before boarding, costing KRW 10,000. Most other nationalities resident in Dubai (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Jordanian, etc.) need a short-term C-3 tourist visa from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Abu Dhabi. Processing takes around 8–10 working days. Fees range from AED 110 to AED 330 depending on entries. Apply in person or through an authorised travel agent — Korea does not accept postal applications from the UAE.
Do you actually need a visa?
UAE passport holders are visa-exempt for 30 days for tourism. So are nationals of the US, UK, most EU countries, Singapore, Japan, and around 110 other jurisdictions on Korea's visa-waiver list.[1]
But — and this catches people — visa-free doesn't mean paperwork-free. As of 2024, most visa-exempt travellers must obtain K-ETA before flying. The fee is KRW 10,000 (roughly AED 27), valid for 3 years or until your passport expires. Apply at k-eta.go.kr at least 72 hours before departure.
Honestly, K-ETA approval is usually quick — often within an hour. But don't leave it to the airport. Emirates and Etihad will deny boarding if you don't have it.
A temporary exemption announced by Korea's Ministry of Justice currently waives K-ETA for tourists from 22 countries including the UK, US, Germany, France, Japan, and Singapore until end of 2025.[2] Check the official K-ETA portal for your specific passport before you assume you're clear.
Applying for the C-3 short-term visa from Abu Dhabi
If you're a Dubai resident on an Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese, or similar passport, you'll need the C-3-9 short-term tourist visa. The Korean consular section sits at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea on Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi — there is no Korean consulate in Dubai itself.
Documents you'll need:
- Completed visa application form (download from overseas.mofa.go.kr)
- Original passport with at least 6 months validity and two blank pages
- One recent colour photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm, white background)
- Copy of your UAE residence visa (valid for at least 3 months beyond your return)
- Emirates ID copy (front and back)
- Confirmed return flight booking
- Hotel reservation covering your full stay
- Bank statements for the last 3 months showing reasonable balance
- Salary certificate or trade licence
- NOC from your employer if you're salaried
The two documents that get applications kicked back are weak bank statements and unclear travel itineraries. The consulate wants to see you can fund the trip and that you're coming back to your UAE job.
Costs (2024): Single entry up to 90 days: AED 110. Double entry: AED 165. Multiple entry: AED 330. Fees paid in cash at submission. No refund if refused.
Where and how to submit
Submissions are accepted Sunday to Thursday, 09:00–11:30, at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Collection is 13:30–15:30 on the date stamped on your receipt. Walk-ins are allowed but appointments via the embassy's email system speed things up.
Processing time is officially 5–8 working days but plan for 10–15 during peak periods (April cherry blossom season, summer holidays, December). The consulate can request additional documents or call you for a short interview — usually about your travel purpose and ties to the UAE.
If you can't attend in person, registered travel agencies in Dubai can lodge on your behalf. Expect a service fee of AED 200–400 on top of the consular fee. Don't use unregistered "visa typing" shops near Karama — the embassy rejects packages from agents not on its approved list.
One practical note: if your UAE residence visa has under 3 months left, apply for renewal first. The consulate routinely refuses applicants whose status looks like it's about to lapse.
What if you're refused?
Korea doesn't publish refusal rates, but the most common reasons are insufficient funds shown, vague travel plans, prior overstays in any country, or weak ties to your country of residence. There is no formal appeal — you reapply, ideally after addressing whatever caused the refusal. Wait at least a month, strengthen your documents, and consider adding a detailed day-by-day itinerary and a sponsorship letter if a relative in Korea is hosting you.
If you're going for business, study, or a longer stay, you'll need a different visa category (C-4, D-2, D-4, E-series). Those go through the same Abu Dhabi embassy but require invitation letters from a Korean entity and additional vetting. For more on entry rules across jurisdictions, browse our visa category.
