Visa for Armenia for UAE Residents: What You Need
If you're a UAE resident planning a trip to Yerevan, the rules are friendlier than you'd think. Armenia runs an electronic visa system and a visa-on-arrival option that covers most passport holders living in the Emirates. Here's the straight answer.
Quick answer
Most UAE residents need a visa for Armenia, but you can usually get one online (eVisa) before flying or on arrival at Zvartnots International Airport. The eVisa costs USD 6 for a 21-day single-entry or USD 31 for 120 days, processed in roughly 3 working days through the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal (evisa.mfa.am). GCC nationals — Emiratis, Saudis, Kuwaitis, Bahrainis, Omanis, Qataris — enter visa-free for 180 days. Everyone else (Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Jordanian passport holders, etc.) needs the eVisa or visa on arrival.[1][2]
Who needs a visa and who doesn't
UAE passport holders don't need anything. You walk in for up to 180 days under the bilateral agreement Armenia signed with the UAE in 2017.[3]
Everyone else resident in the UAE — and that's most of you reading this — needs a visa for Armenia for UAE residents regardless of how long you've held your Emirates ID. Your UAE residency permit does not exempt you from Armenian visa requirements. It only matters for the Armenian authorities if you're applying through the Yerevan embassy route, which honestly nobody bothers with anymore.
Citizens of EU states, the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Russia, and CIS countries enter Armenia visa-free for varying periods (usually 90 or 180 days). If that's your passport, skip the rest of this article.
How to get the Armenia eVisa from the UAE
Go to evisa.mfa.am. The portal is the only official channel — ignore the third-party sites charging USD 50 markups.
You'll need:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date
- A digital passport photo (JPEG, recent)
- Hotel booking or invitation letter
- Return flight ticket
- Credit card for the USD 6 or USD 31 fee
Processing takes up to 3 working days, though in my experience it lands in your inbox within 24 hours. Print two copies of the approval letter. One for the airline check-in counter in Dubai or Sharjah, one for the immigration desk in Yerevan.
The 21-day visa is single-entry. The 120-day version allows multiple entries and is what you want if you're doing the Tbilisi-Yerevan loop or planning a return trip.
A small but annoying point: the portal occasionally rejects payments from UAE-issued cards flagged as "international high-risk." If your card bounces, try a different bank's card or use a friend's. Don't panic and reapply — duplicate applications get auto-flagged.
Visa on arrival at Zvartnots Airport
Yes, this still works. You can land at Yerevan without an eVisa and pay AMD 3,000 (around AED 28) for a 21-day visa or AMD 15,000 (around AED 140) for 120 days at the airport visa desk.[2]
Bring cash in Armenian dram or US dollars. Card machines at the visa counter are unreliable — I've seen clients queue for 40 minutes because the POS terminal was down. The eVisa saves you that hassle for the same money.
Visa on arrival is also available at the land borders with Georgia (Bagratashen, Bavra, Gogavan) but not at the Iran border crossing, where you must have the eVisa already approved.
What about onward travel and Nagorno-Karabakh
A quick warning. Travelling to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) is no longer possible following the September 2023 events, and the region is under Azerbaijani control. Any old advice telling you to "get a permit in Yerevan" is outdated. Don't try it.
If you're flying onward to Azerbaijan after Armenia, expect questions at Baku immigration. An Armenian stamp in your passport doesn't automatically bar you, but it triggers secondary screening. For UAE residents holding Pakistani, Indian, or Filipino passports, factor in extra time.

One last thing
Armenia doesn't require proof of vaccination, travel insurance, or a minimum bank balance for tourist entry. Customs is relaxed but you must declare cash above USD 10,000. Your UAE driving licence is valid for 6 months from entry if you're renting a car — useful for the Dilijan and Lake Sevan drive.
