How to Download Your Emirates ID Card in 2025
If you're holding a paper printout from the post office and wondering whether that's actually your ID, you're not alone. Most residents miss the fact that the physical card was discontinued in April 2025, and your real Emirates ID now lives in your phone. Here's how the emirates id card download actually works, what counts as proof, and where people slip up.
The Short Answer
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) — the federal body that issues Emirates IDs — replaced the plastic card with a digital version in April 2025. To do an emirates id card download, install the UAE Pass app, verify your identity, then open the ICP app or AlHosn-linked services to view and download the digital ID as a PDF. The PDF and the in-app version both carry a QR code that government and private entities scan as legal proof of identity. No more lost-card panic. No more AED 300 replacement fees.
What "Emirates ID Card Download" Actually Means in 2025
The physical card is gone for new issuances and renewals. ICP announced the shift in early 2025, and by April the printing of plastic cards stopped for most categories.[1] What you download now is one of two things: a PDF copy of your ID issued through the ICP UAE app, or the live digital ID inside UAE Pass.
Both are legally recognised under Federal Decree-Law No. 17 of 2022 on the Identity Card and Population Register System, which already treated electronic IDs as equivalent to physical ones.[2]
Honestly, most clients ask me whether banks and DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) will accept the digital version. They do. I've watched a relationship manager at ENBD scan a client's UAE Pass QR in front of me last month — took eleven seconds.
Step-by-Step: Downloading Your Emirates ID
Two routes. Pick one.
Route 1: UAE Pass (recommended)
Download UAE Pass from the App Store or Google Play. Register with your Emirates ID number and a UAE mobile number. You'll need to verify by visiting a kiosk — most malls have them, and the Customer Happiness Centres do too — or by scanning your existing card if you still hold a valid one. Once verified at the "Verified" tier, open the app, tap "My ID," and you'll see your digital Emirates ID with a refreshing QR code. Tap the download icon for a PDF.
Route 2: ICP UAE Smart App
Install "ICP UAE" (the official app, blue logo — there are knock-offs). Log in with UAE Pass. Go to "Services" → "Emirates ID" → "Download Card." The PDF generates in under a minute and saves to your device.
That's it. No printing required, no laminating, no queueing at a typing centre on Salah Al Din Street wondering if you brought the right Ejari (Dubai's tenancy contract registration certificate).
Watch out: The PDF has a validity window tied to a refresh date. If you saved a copy in May 2025 and try to use it in November, some entities will flag it as stale. Re-download monthly if you keep an offline copy.
What If You're Outside the UAE?
This trips a lot of people. UAE Pass verification requires either an in-person kiosk visit or a video call session with an ICP officer. If you're abroad and never verified your UAE Pass, you're stuck at the "Basic" tier, which doesn't expose the ID download feature.
Workaround: contact your typing centre or PRO before you travel. Get verified to "Verified" tier while you're still in the country. Once that's done, you can do an emirates id card download from anywhere — Manila, Mumbai, Manchester, doesn't matter.
For new residents who haven't yet collected their ID, the digital version is automatically issued once your medical fitness, biometrics, and visa stamping are complete. ICP sends an SMS. The card lives in the app from day one.
Fees, Renewal, and the Bits Nobody Mentions
The emirates id card download itself is free. What costs money is the underlying ID issuance or renewal:
- 1-year ID (linked to most residence visas): AED 100 issuance + AED 70 service fee
- 2-year ID: AED 200 + AED 70
- 3-year ID (GCC nationals, some categories): AED 300 + AED 70
- Urgent "Fawri" service at ICP centres: additional AED 150
These figures are published on the ICP fees page and were current as of mid-2025.[3] Typing centre charges (around AED 30-50) sit on top if you don't apply online yourself.
Renewal opens 30 days before expiry. Miss the expiry date and you're charged AED 20 per day in late fees, capped at AED 1,000.[3] I've seen clients hit the cap because they assumed the digital ID renews itself automatically. It doesn't. The system still needs you to pay and re-submit biometrics if required.
Key dates: Renew within 30 days of expiry to avoid late fees. Biometrics are typically required every 10 years for citizens and every renewal cycle for residents under 15 or over 70.
Using the Digital ID in Real Life
The QR code is the whole game. When a bank, telecom, hospital, or government counter asks for your ID, you open the app, show the QR, they scan, done. The scan pulls a verified data set from the federal register in real time — name, ID number, nationality, expiry, photo.
A few places where it works smoothly today: Etisalat and du stores, all federal ministries, Dubai Courts e-services, DHA hospitals, Emirates NBD, FAB, ADCB, Mashreq, RTA, Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police, and most DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) entities.
Where you'll still occasionally hit friction: small private clinics, older landlords who want to photocopy something, and a handful of free zone authorities that haven't updated their intake forms. Frankly, the workaround is just emailing the downloaded PDF — they always accept that.
For employment matters, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) — the federal labour regulator — accepts the digital ID for all contract signings and complaint filings on its app and portal.[4]
When Things Go Wrong
A few real scenarios from the last six months:
Lost phone with UAE Pass installed. No drama. Get a new SIM with your same number, reinstall UAE Pass, re-verify via biometric face match. Your digital ID reappears. There's no "lost card" fee anymore because there's no card to lose.
ID details wrong after renewal. Happens with name spellings, especially Arabic-to-English transliterations. File a data amendment through the ICP app under "Modify Personal Information." Bring your passport. Free if it's an authority error, AED 150 if it's a customer-initiated correction.
Employer keeps demanding a physical card. This is on them, not you. Article 4 of Federal Decree-Law No. 17 of 2022 treats the digital ID as primary proof. Send them the ICP circular and move on. If they refuse to process anything without plastic, that's a complaint to MOHRE.
Children under 15. Parents handle the download through their own UAE Pass under "Dependents." Same flow, same QR, same legal weight.

A Quick Word on Security
The QR refreshes. That's by design. A screenshot someone took of your ID three weeks ago won't validate today, which makes the digital version arguably safer than the old plastic card you used to hand over at car rental counters.
Still, don't share screenshots in WhatsApp groups, don't post your ID online (people do this), and turn on biometric lock for UAE Pass. The app supports Face ID and fingerprint — use them.
The Bottom Line
The emirates id card download isn't a workaround or a backup. It's the ID now. Get UAE Pass verified, install the ICP app, and you're done. The whole process — start to finished PDF — takes under twenty minutes if your verification is current.
The people who struggle are usually the ones who never bothered with UAE Pass when they had the chance, then need their ID urgently while abroad. Don't be that person.
