ICA Smart Services Visa Validity Check: How to Do It
If you're trying to confirm whether your UAE visa is still active — before booking a flight, signing a tenancy, or starting a new job — the ICA smart services visa validity check is the fastest free way to do it. Takes under a minute if you have the right details ready.
Quick answer
Go to the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) smart services portal at icp.gov.ae, open the "Public Services" menu, and choose "File Validity" or "Visa Validity." Enter your passport number, nationality, and date of birth — or your Unified Number / residence file number if you have one. The system returns the visa status, type, issue date, and expiry. No login required. It's the same data the airline check-in counter pulls, so trust it over a screenshot from someone's phone.
What you'll need before you start
You can run the ica smart services visa validity check two ways, and which one you use depends on what's in your wallet.
Option 1 — Passport details. Passport number, nationality, date of birth, and gender. Works for tourists, visit-visa holders, and anyone without a UAE file open yet.
Option 2 — Unified Number or File Number. The Unified Number is the 8-10 digit number printed on your residence visa stamp and Emirates ID file. File numbers look like 201/YYYY/XXXXXXX (Abu Dhabi/Northern Emirates) or 101/YYYY/XXXXXXX (Dubai-issued through ICP). Faster and more accurate than the passport route.
One thing most people get wrong: if your visa was issued through Dubai's GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs), the ICP portal may show limited data. For Dubai-issued residence visas, cross-check on smartservices.icp.gov.ae and also gdrfad.gov.ae. Both are official.
Step-by-step: running the check
- Open icp.gov.ae in a browser. Don't use a random "uae visa check" site — half of them harvest passport data.
- Switch language to English (top right) if needed.
- Click Public Services → Smart Services → search for "File Validity" or "Visa Validity Check."
- Pick the search type: by passport or by file/unified number.
- Enter the details exactly as they appear in your passport. One typo on the passport number and you'll get "no record found" — which scares people unnecessarily.
- Solve the captcha. Submit.
- The result shows visa type (residence, visit, employment entry permit, etc.), sponsor, issue date, and expiry date.
If you see "No data" but you know the visa exists, try the alternative search method, or check whether the visa is GDRFA-Dubai issued and use that portal instead.
Watch out: The portal sometimes returns the file expiry rather than the entry-permit expiry. For a fresh employment entry permit, look specifically for the "Permit Expiry" field, not "File Expiry." Two different dates. Frankly, the UI doesn't make this obvious.
When the check matters legally
Overstaying a UAE visa triggers a daily fine of AED 50 from the day after expiry, under the executive regulations of Federal Decree-Law No. 29 of 2021 on the Entry and Residence of Foreigners. There's no longer a grace-period distinction between visit and residence for the fine rate — both sit at AED 50/day as of the 2022 amendments. The fine is calculated automatically when you exit or renew, so the ica smart services visa validity check is genuinely the cheapest insurance you have.
If you're an employer, running the ica smart services visa validity check on a new hire before they sign is standard due diligence. A candidate with an active visa under another sponsor cannot be onboarded until that file is cancelled — and you don't want to discover that on day one.
For tenants and landlords, the Ejari (Dubai's tenancy registration system) requires a valid residence visa for the contract holder. A quick validity check before signing avoids a stuck Ejari registration later.
What the result won't tell you
The validity check confirms status and dates. It does not show:
- Whether a travel ban or absconding case is registered against you (different system — you'd need to check with the police or via a legal consultation)
- Pending fines on the file
- Labour card status (that's on MOHRE — the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation — at mohre.gov.ae)
- Health insurance validity
So if you're planning to leave the country and you're worried about more than just visa expiry, the validity portal is a starting point, not the whole answer. For travel-ban concerns specifically, see our guide on UAE travel ban checks.
If the portal shows your residence as expired and you're still in the country, don't panic-book a flight first. Renewing inside the UAE is usually cheaper than exiting on overstay and re-entering. Talk to a lawyer or a registered typing centre before the fines compound.
