Quick answer: UAE vehicle registration requires a valid technical inspection, 13-month insurance, cleared fines, and Emirates ID. Dubai fees start at roughly AED 420 for a private car. Registration is annual and can be completed online via the RTA or Abu Dhabi Police app.

Vehicle Registration in the UAE: Fees and Steps 2024

Whether you have bought a new or used car, moved to a different emirate, or transferred ownership of your vehicle, you must complete vehicle registration before driving it legally on public roads. The rules are similar across emirates but not identical, and fees vary depending on the vehicle type and engine size.

Short Answer

Registering a vehicle in the UAE requires a valid technical inspection certificate (for vehicles more than three years old), comprehensive or third-party insurance valid for at least 13 months, clearance of all traffic fines, a valid UAE Emirates ID, and proof of vehicle ownership. Basic fees in Dubai start at approximately AED 420 for a private car, to which plate fees, knowledge fees, and innovation fees are added. Registration is typically annual and can be completed online via the RTA Dubai Drive app or the Abu Dhabi Police app within minutes.

What You Actually Need to Register a Vehicle

The list is short, but missing a single document means returning the next day.

  • Valid UAE Emirates ID.
  • Valid technical inspection certificate from an approved centre (Tasjeel, Shamil, or Walfra in Dubai). Vehicles under three years old are exempt from full technical inspection but may require a visual check.
  • Valid insurance policy covering at least 13 months (this requirement is consistent across virtually all emirates; many people make the mistake of purchasing only 12 months of cover).
  • No-objection certificate from the bank if the vehicle is financed.
  • Full settlement of all traffic fines and Salik or Darb toll charges where applicable.

If you forget a single item, the transaction will be rejected immediately and partially paid fees will not be refunded.

Vehicle Registration Fees 2024

The figures below apply to light private vehicles. Trucks, buses, and motorcycles follow separate fee schedules.

In Dubai (Roads and Transport Authority – RTA):

  • Annual registration fee: AED 400.
  • Knowledge fee: AED 20.
  • Innovation fee: AED 10.
  • Plate fee: starting from AED 35 for a standard plate, rising for personalised plates.
  • New registration card: AED 20.

In Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi Police):

  • Annual renewal fee: approximately AED 365 for a private car.
  • Technical inspection fee: AED 170 at Mawaqif centres.

In Sharjah:

  • Renewal fee: approximately AED 400 inclusive of inspection.

Add to these figures the cost of insurance, which is in practice the largest expense, ranging from AED 1,200 to AED 4,500 per year depending on vehicle type and driver age.

Note: Unsettled fines mean automatic rejection of renewal. Check your fines before attending a registration centre using the traffic authority app in your emirate.

Online Registration Step by Step

The online service is strongly recommended over queuing in person, as it is considerably faster.

  1. Open the Dubai Drive app or the RTA website (for Dubai), or the Abu Dhabi Police app (TAMM).
  2. Select "Renew Vehicle Ownership" or "Register New Vehicle."
  3. Enter the plate number and ownership card number.
  4. Upload the new insurance policy in PDF format.
  5. Pay the fees by bank card.
  6. The electronic registration card will be delivered to the app; new physical plates are dispatched by post within 2–5 working days if requested.

The paper ownership card has not been mandatory in Dubai since 2022; the digital version is sufficient at any checkpoint. However, if you drive the vehicle to Oman or Saudi Arabia, print a hard copy as a backup, since border officers sometimes accept only paper documents.

Transferring Vehicle Registration Between Emirates

If you purchase a vehicle registered in another emirate, you must transfer its registration to your emirate of residence. The procedure requires:

  • An export certificate from the original emirate of registration (fee approximately AED 100–150).
  • A new technical inspection in the new emirate.
  • New registration with the plates of the new emirate.

The entire process takes half a working day if all documents are in order. Old plates must be surrendered to the registration centre or retained for an annual fee if they are personalised plates.

A frequently asked question: can you keep Dubai plates while residing in Abu Dhabi? The legal answer is that the emirate of registration must correspond to the emirate of actual residence, although enforcement is sometimes lenient. Do not build a long-term plan on that leniency.

If renewal is overdue, a late fine of AED 25 per month applies up to a maximum of 12 months, after which the registration is cancelled and a full re-registration is required.
